Stupid mistakes to avoid series here

Lets start off with the fish then match the tackle to the sort of fish you want to catch.

A record perch what a monster but what a beautiful fish.

Perch are with out doubt one of the best looking of all the coarse fish and they put up a good fight when caught so are well worth having a go for. One of the best ways of catching perch is to use the humble garden Lobworm for bait and simply ledger it on the bottom or use it under a float. Perch will go for a lively moving bait so don't forget to move your float to wiggle the worm around and try fishing close by reeds or the inside bank as they often hang close to such features to ambush there prey. Here are two easy methods for catching perch but be careful they have sharp spikes behind there gills and on there dorsal fins so handle them with great care.

Perch caught from Common pond this year all over 2lb.

The first rig is for on the bottom use a strong line 3lb should be fine and the second rig is for float fishing use a perch bob float and set the depth so you are just off the bottom. Perch are also caught on small spinners during the summer months but when its cold the lobworms from your garden are a great bait.

Go fishing for Roach!

Bream fishing is great fun but not everyone likes them. People who fish for carp and get pestered by a shoal of bream for instance. However if your fishing your local rivers then bream should be on your list of fish to go for.

So what shall we take to go bream fishing then? Well its a good idea to start off with a swim feeder and a quiver tip rod, a reel loaded with 4lb breaking strain line and hooks ranging from size 18 to 12 should cover you. Your bait list should include a bag of ground bait such as gold pro or sensas magic some red worms red maggots sweet corn and bread and half a pint of caster. If money is tight just bread corn or worms but you must have a bag of ground bait.

The key to fishing the river for bream comes down to two things. The first is casting your swim feeder to the same spot every time, you can do this by casting out and clipping your line up on your reel so every time you cast out your swim feeder it hits the same spot. By casting to the same spot you will be able to build up a bed of food on the river bed for the bream to come along and eat. The next key factor for bream is your bait and your ground bait mix. Your bait must be fresh and Bream love cocktail baits such as red worm and red maggot or bread and maggot or corn and maggot try different combinations of this three to see what they like. When the bream do arrive in your swim keeping them there is down to putting small baits in your ground bait mix such as micro pellets and caster which the bream have to pick out which keep them there longer. These Bream from our stretch at Ellingham were all caught on red worm tipped with a single red maggot and my ground bait mix was gold pro with half a pint of caster and micro pellets mixed in.

Here's a simple feeder rig for catching bream that you might like to try out on the river. Be warned bream are very slimy and you will need a rag to wipe your hands with and take a disgorger to remove hooks with and a large landing net.

Go fishing for Roach!

Go fishing for Roach!
Tench are wonderful fish to catch in the summer months and they will give you plenty to think about as you set out to catch them. So lets sort out our gear first.

The rod and reel bait and rigs to use...

Lets start off with a simple set up a 12ft float rod with an open face reel loaded with 5lb breaking strain line. To this we will add a simple running ledger rig with a size 12 hook and the bait we will be using is bread flake and mashed bread. If you wish to fish with a float just swop the lead for a straight waggler as in the diagrams below.

These very simple rigs have caught many big Tench and will work on most waters. For your bait simple nip on a big pinch of bread flake. I like to take a bucket with me and put half a loaf of bread in it and mash it up with some water. I then throw that out to where I'm going to fish. Alternative baits that work well are worms and sweet corn  both cheap and easy to find. For bite detection place your rod on two rod rests and place a folded bit of tin foil over your line between the reel and the first ring, pull it down about 8inches and sit by your rod ready to strike or you might get it pulled in the water! Yes if your dad or mum has bought you buzzers and all the gear use that, but if your tight on money this way will catch you lots of Tench. Don't forget your landing net and disgorger and always wet your hands before handling any fish.

Go fishing for Roach!

Roach are very common and are found  in most rivers lakes and ponds they are not hard to catch so if your just starting out roach are a good fish to try for.

Your going to need a Rod reel and line. Some floats hooks and weights. You will also need a disgorger to remove the hooks from the fish you catch and a landing net.

First the rod, a good roach rod is light with a tip action and ideal length would be 12 or 13ft.If it is too short you will have trouble fishing rivers where the water is deeper, short telescopic rods are not a good idea!

The reel should be an open face reel ideally with a spare spool. I common mistake is to not fill the spool with line right up to the lip this makes it much harder to cast further remember fill your spool right up to the lip.

Line and hooks. Time after time I see youngsters fishing for roach with big hooks and thick lines. This is not the way to fish for roach. Your line only needs to be 2lb breaking strain for roach then match this with a small hook a size 18 or 20 is a good start.

Floats and weights. There are more floats out there then you will ever use or need so keep it simple. Buy yourself some straight waggler floats some stick floats and some Avon floats. These floats will cover you for most of your fishing here's what they look like.

Avon float       Waggler       Stick float

These 3 floats will serve you well along with a container of split shot in the following sizes AA BB Number4 and number8s.

Here is a simple set up that will catch roach-

the waggler float.

The waggler is a very good float and can be used to catch many different fish on many different waters rivers lakes ponds can all be fished with a waggler.

You will need a Peter Drennen Crystal waggler taking 2 and a half AA shot. Some have fine insert for extra sensitivity some are just blunt topped. Ok thread the waggler up your line about 4 ft then place an AA shot above it and another below it to lock the float in place. Then add 2 or 3 number 4 shots further down the line and tie on a size 18 hook. Follow the diagram below for this.

This basic rig would be good for lakes ponds and rivers but you will have to fish it at about 4-5ft deep. Putting a string of number4 shot below and spacing them out equally is the best way to start off.

USE A PLUMMET. this is little weight that you clip on your hook to find out how deep the water your fishing is. Just clip it to your hook and cast out. If your float sinks your too deep so move it up a bit until the floats tip just shows now you know your fishing at the right depth. Its a good idea not to put the number 4 shots on while doing this then if your too deep the float will just lay flat. Find the depth then take off your plummet and add your number 4s so the float tip is just showing.

With this basic rig you will be able to catch Roach Dace Chub Small Carp Perch and other smaller fish. Its a good way to start and its simple to set up.

Buy your self a pint of maggots and a catapult and head off to your local river or lake to start catching some roach. When you have found the right depth and set your float up put on a maggot or two maggots and cast out to a likely spot. Using your catapult put in about 12 maggots every 5 minutes around your float and try to keep them in the same tight little spot. This will encourage the roach to stay where your casting to and get them biting. Using a catapult and feeding 12 or so maggots every other cast is one of the most important things to learn. In fact it is the one thing that will make you a good angler or a great angler learning how to feed your swim correctly can mean the difference between a few fish and a lot of fish. Remember feed the maggots with your catapult every other cast.

Top stupid mistakes to avoid when fishing for roach.

1.Using big hooks and thick lines. remember! small hooks light lines.

2.Not filling your reel up with line to the lip of the spool makes it hard to cast out further.

3.Using a silly, yes I said silly, little short rod get a good one at least 12ft long.

4.Forgetting your disgorger to remove hooks with duh!

5.Not using your catapult and firing out 10-12 maggots every other cast. And not using a plummet to find out how deep your swim is.

Hot tip..

FISHING WITH THE METHOD FEEDER HOW TO GO ABOUT IT.

METHOD FEEDERS CAME ABOUT ALL MOST BY ACCIDENT WHEN ANGLERS DISCOVERED THAT THE FISH WERE ATTACKING THE GROUND BAIT IN THERE NORMAL FEEDERS. ONE CLEVER MAN DECIDED TO PUT HIS HOOK BAIT IN THE FEEDER ITSELF AND THE METHOD FEEDER WAS BORN.

NOW THERE  ARE MANY TYPES OF METHOD FEEDERS BUT THERE BASIC JOB IS THE SAME.

HERE IS THE BASIC METHOD FEEDER RIG

TO USE IT SIMPLY PRESS THE FEEDER INTO SOME METHOD FEEDER MIX GROUND BAIT  THEN LAY YOUR HOOK BAIT ON TOP OF SOME MORE IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND AND PRESS THE FEEDER INTO IT AGAIN TRAPPING YOUR HOOK BAIT INTO THE FEEDER.

USED WITH A SHORT HOOK LINK ABOUT 4INCHES LONG AND A HAIR RIGGED BAIT LIKE CORN OR LUNCHEON MEAT THIS RIG IS A BRILLIANT CATCHER OF CARP TENCH AND BREAM IN STILL WATERS.

I RECOMMEND THE NEW KORUM CARP FEEDERS WITH THERE QUICK STOP HAIR RIGS THAT COME READY TIED FOR QUICK USE AND EASY CHANGE OF BAIT. TRY THEM THEY'RE BRILLIANT.

Start a fishing Diary...

Well why not start a fishing dairy and keep a record of what you catch when you caught it, and how much it weighed.

All you need is a small note book and  pen. When you get back from your fishing trip write down all the details of your fishing day and draw some pictures of what rig you used and what bait was the best. If you do this in years to come you will be able to look back and remember what worked and what didn't. Here's a page from my fishing dairy to show you how to start off. Its up to you really but write all the detail down so you can remember next time you go what was successful.

After many years of fishing trips my fishing diaries are really useful I can go back and find out just what I was doing and also see how many fish I caught. So start your fishing diary today and in years to come you will be glad you did.

Fish it with a bread punch and grind some up in a blender to use in you pole pot to attract roach into your swim.

Use it to make a paste and ledger it for roach and bream. Fish the crust floated on the top for big carp as they cruise along the surface in the summer months endless uses and dead cheap don't go fishing with out it...

Hemp seed and tares

Buy it from your local pet shop in 1kilo bags and just cook it slowly till the seeds split open. cook the tares till they are soft to squeeze between your fingers. Split shot and shotting patterns.

Are you confused about how to put those little weights under your float? Well try to remember the golden rule and keep it simple. Split shot  is what the little weights are called and they come in these common sizes. AA BB Number 4 and 6 and 8. AAs are the big ones and they get smaller from there down to number 8s. The way you put them on your line is called the Shotting pattern and it will make all the difference to how many fish you catch so check out the float fishing link below and learn how to put the split shot on the floats using the correct Shotting pattern. Guaranteed to make you a better angler!

Paste fishing for carp

for those of you who have not tried it yet here's the low down and how to get started.

If you have not tried this method yet here's is a winning method. get yourself a bag of 2ml carp pellets half for feeding  and half for making into paste, put half the pellets in a food grinder and grind them down to a powder. Now add some cooled boiled water to the ground pellets a little at a time mixing with your hands until you start to get a paste forming. it is very very important that the paste is soft but not sloppy. when I say soft I mean soft enough to fall off your hook when you bring it out of the water again got that very important.

Ok bag up your paste mix in a plastic bag to stop it drying out. I used this method at Topcroft lakes today and it worked great so give it a go.

using your pole at 5meters plumb the depth carefully you will need a long bristle pole float for this and no shot down the line with just a size14 hook on the business end 3ilb line straight through.

Find the dead depth and put your pole pot on your pole and were ready to go.

Fill your pole pot with some sinking pellets and wrap a penny sized bit of paste around your hook ship you pole out and tip the pellets over you target area and sprinkle the pellets out. Now watch your float it should be sitting up with half the bristle showing while the paste keeps it down in the water. Should the paste come off it will rise and fall flat but the fish will soon be pulling it about with some luck. IT can be tricky at first but keep feeding and soon they will come to the paste and your float will bob about then sail under or rise up and lay flat. don't strike hard just lift into the bite and you should be ok.

Any questions just email me at mark@bctac.co.uk

Hot tip..

when fishing with corn for carp pinch the guts out of the corn and fish the shell only, move your float about often to encourage the carp to take the skin as it wafts about. Try it and see for yourself how many more carp you will catch.

Make your own floats!

Making your own floats for fishing is great fun and easy to do. Lets start by making a simple waggler float that you can catch loads of fish with.

You will need.

  •  Some Peacock Quills

  •  some model aeroplane paints

  •  some araldite glue

  •  a craft knife small paint brush

  •  and some match sticks.

First step is to get your piece of peacock quill and remove all the feathers until you have a nice white bit of quill. Best way to do this is to rub it down with a little bit of sandpaper.

Next cut your quill to the length of float you want 10inchs is ok to start off. Try to cut the quill so it is a nice straight piece.

Now take a match stick and cut the top off so you have and inch of match stick left. Then gently push this into the bottom of the float then glue in in place with some araldite glue. This will be where you push the float into a silicone float adapter as shown.

Now all you need to do is paint your float with some matt paint and then give it a coat of varnish and your home made waggler is done.

I like to paint the number of split shot the float will take on the side so I can set it up quick when I go fishing. Try making your own floats and save some money.
