Hi Mark
Just been down to peg 8 below Ellingham mill on Sunday 22nd with son
Daniel.
We are obviously doing something wrong! we fished from about 2.30pm till
6.15pm and managed a mixed bag of 30 gudgeon, perch, ruff (I think that's
what they were, like perch without the colour), a couple of small roach
and my very first chub (only about 3oz, but a chub none the less).
We both fished a running feeder to size 16 Barbless hook direct to 6lb
reel line. Tried maggots, casters, cheese, cat biscuits, sweet corn and
bread, the only bait we could catch on was the maggots.
Having spent most of my life fishing the lower reaches of the Waveney, any
advice on the best way to fish further upstream would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks Paul..
Daniel asks
Mark how do I Breed my own
maggots?
Alex from Bungay ask. I
would like to fish the method feeder for carp can you suggest good rig set
up.
Peter from Lowestoft asks.. Hi mark when I
am bream fishing I keep getting quick bites and missing loads of
them I have tried smaller hooks and lighter lines but I cant solve it got
any suggestions?
Kathy from Bungay asks.. Hi Mark is there
any way I can stop my husband from going fishing so much?
Daz from Suffolk ask...when using
tares in the river at Beccles I seem to bump a lot of fish off when
using a size 18 kamasan b511 hook. I am mainly fishing the stick float
just off the bottom. any ideas

Hi Paul
This is one reason why I prefer to fish a river then a commercial fishery
they are far more challenging. Ok I will tell you how I fished it to catch
84lb of Bream from Ellingham. First off is the location of the fish, the
river is full of little chub roach and the ruff you were talking about and
you will catch them along its whole length. To catch the bigger fish you
have to be more selective in your choice of swims and where you fish. I
fished on peg 3 at Ellingham to catch the bream the reason being is that
there is an outlet from the mill just opposite the tree to your right and
here is an ideal place for fish to get out of the strong tidal flow that
we have due to all the rain of late. Next is the tackle and bait your
using, when your targeting bigger fish like the bream and Tench bait
choice is very important and the placing of your swim feeder is crucial to
success. For my bait on the day I choose worms, red maggots and bread
flake and casters that was it nothing else.
My ground bait for the feeder was sensas magic and to this I added half a
pint of casters some chopped worm and half a pint of micro pellets and
some hemp seed. All these small particles in the ground bait help to hold
a large shoal of bream or Tench as they have to grub around picking up the
smaller baits like the casters and micro pellets, rather like if you drop
a box of matches it takes you ages to pick them all up.
On the hook I used half a worm hooked through where I cut him in half and
tipped this with a single red maggot. Load up the swim feeder bait your
hook and your set to go. Now cast to the edge of the tree to your right
hand side with a gentle under arm flick and let your swim feeder empty
out. Now reel back in again and repeat this about 8 times to quickly build
up a pile of feed on the river bed. Don't expect a fish straight away I
had to wait 35 minutes or more before I got my first bream it will take
time for them to move in on your feed so keep putting bait out for them
always always in the same spot this is very important.
Now after a while the bream if they are there will move in on your bait
and bites will be slower more positive pull round on your quiver tip rod,
quick stabbing bites are normally roach or perch trembling bites are those
pesky crayfish we get down there now.
That is how I caught my bream bag Paul now all you have to do is follow my
instruction and hopefully you will be able to do the same, you must be
aware though that the bream shoals move around according to the tides but
they are normally around peg 3 or at the top end by peg 23 in the matches
we fish down there. As for chub I find a big bit of bread flake ledgered
under a willow tree or close to a bush or over hang normally will do the
trick and I use mashed bread as a sloppy ground bait to draw them in and
it makes a good change bait for the bream if they go off the worm and
maggot.
Float fishing is best done with a stick float or a pole and hooks should
be small size 20 or 18s, loose feed hemp seed and use red maggots for bait
feed regularly and often for success. Only baits I use on the river are
worms bread maggots sweet corn and the all important casters which are
vital for success for bream in your ground bait and I never go with out
fresh cooked hemp seed.
I hope that helps you out and I am looking forward to seeing some pictures
of a big net of fish ok, and don't forget we have a competition for the
best fish and you can win a nice new fishing reel see the details on the
news page
Well Daniel its a smelly
old business and unless your hard up I would not bother. But as you ask
here's how I do it. Take on sheep's heart from the butchers. Leave it
outside in a cake tin with the lid just off for 2 day until you can see
the blows or flies eggs on it. You don't need many to get a lot of
maggots. Next wrap the whole lot in newspaper like a bag of fish n chips.
leave for one week ,open and put into a bucket of damp bran over night
then riddle your maggots off the bran, and there you are home grown
maggots.
Beware it really stinks.
Hi Alex. I would suggest
you take a look at the new Korum carp feeders and there easy to use quick
stops with quick stop needle. You can get the hair rigs already tied for
you with quick stops on them. Simply press the feeder into some method mix
ground bait or pellets then repeat the process laying your hook bait in
the next batch and mould to shape. The Korum feeders are made of clear
polycarbonate and blend into the bottom nicely. I first rate feeder well
worth getting.
Hi
Peter, It sounds like you are getting bothered by smaller bream in the 2lb
range, which unlike there big brothers can give you much quicker bites
that are hard to hit. I suggest using a size 14 hook and hair rig it with
a small korum bait spike. Once this is on just spike your corn or a bit of
bread flake on it. Next put a small ledger stop behind your swim feeder
about 2inchs behind it. This will act as mini bolt rig and you will find
your catch rate will improve significantly. Tight lines. Mark.
Err. No. Next question. lol
Daz try going bigger use a 14
wide gap hook and strike harder and faster, dot the float right down as
far as you can get and keep catapulting hemp out every cast. I can
sometimes get through 2pints or more if the roach are going for it. But
lately I've noticed in the main river casters are beginning to work again.
I also use a long rod 15ft and 18ft it helps a great deal. If your using
the pole tighten your elastic up so you can connect with the fish. I have
to say though I find a rod and line more effective if the flow is pushing
through fast which it often does on this tidal stretch of the Southern
Broads.
