Hi my name is Malcolm Fodder and I am the match secretary of the saltwater section of our club. You can contact me via email at Datkin13den@aol.com
(apologies the previous email DATKIN13den@aol.com was wrong! the correct one is... Datkin13den@aol.com please try again if you have recently emailed us. Thank you The salt water side of the club is a friendly club with loyal members who have been with the club for a number of years. We have taken a year out in the hope of generating more enthusiasm from the 2nd of September 2007 when we restart our new season; we would welcome any body that would like to become a member (note: if you are a bctac full member you are already a member of the sea fishing section but, if you just want to just fish the saltwater side of the club it will cost you 7.50 only.) In the meantime we will this year fish our private Trophies, which we have had donated to the saltwater section. One of which is in memory of John Runicals a keen fishing member who sadly died a few years ago. So in his memory, we have the Runicals Memorial trophy. The Porter Cup Donated by M. Porter and the Fodder Pairs trophy donated by myself. At Easter we have a match for any bidding young people 16 years and under Mr Osborne kindly donates the Easter eggs for this match. Later we hold a junior match which gives the youngsters a second chance at trying there hand out at catching fish, these are non member matches and open to anyone as long as we have the names in advance, especially the 16 and under as we like to ensure that they all get a prize for taking part. For the 16 and unders we need a family member to help with casting and ensuring their safety at all times.
If you would like to take part in any of these event or would like to find out more please feel free to email me.

If your new to sea fishing and would like to give it a go here's a simple starter guide for you.
The Tackle. There's no need to spend a lot of cash if your just going to give it a try. The basics kit consists of a beach caster rod about 12ft in length with a fixed spool reel, avoid multiplier reels if your a beginner as they can lead to big tangles. Load your reel with some 25lb breaking strain line and attach a 10ft length of shock leader line to the end with a breaking strain of 50lb. Next your going to need lead weights hooks and a pair of long nose pliers for hook removal. Add to this a rod stand and a plastic chopping board with a sharp knife for your bait and you can go sea fishing! Believe me you don't need any more than that to get started. Yes of course you can buy a beach shelter a tilly lamp water proof suit and all the trimming but for a simple quick session on your local beach that is all your going to need. My wife and I spent less then 50.00 pounds on our first set of gear and we caught lots of fish with it on our local beaches.
Bait Most of the time 30 to 40 rag worm or lug worm with some strips of squid and some mackerel will do nicely the draw back here being the cost of bait expect to pay about 5.00 to 8.00 pound for bait unless you know a friendly bait digger!
The basic rig To start off with a basic paternoster rig is fine. Simple attach your lead weight to the end of your shock leader then at 1foot intervals above the weight tie 2 loops and attach your hook length with your hooks to this. Its simple and easy and it works.
Bait up and cast out! Get down to your local beach just two hours before high tide with your basic kit and slide on a couple of lug or rag worms up your hook tipped off with some strips of squid and cast out. You don't have to be a super caster many times the fish are close in. My wife catches many fish while I am too far out so don't worry about casting it will come with practise. Place your rod in the rod holder and watch the tip for any signs of a bite. In the summer months small bass will often be around and will give your rod a good whack round other time it might just twitch a bit as a small pouting or sole takes your bait you never quite now what you will get which is the fun part. But do watch out for a small fish called the weaver fish if you catch one be very careful they have poisonous spiky dorsal fins that will give you a nasty sting. Starting sea fishing is great fun and being there with the waves crashing on the beach as the sunsets and your first fish on the end of your line is a great feeling, give it a go you will be glad you did. |

First Prize and Best fish goes to Belinda Robinson well done..
Second Prize was Libby Goldspink looking very pleased with her trophy and fish.
And Smiles all round from the Bungay Cherry tree sea fishing section members
Well as you can see for yourselves the sea fishing section is very much alive and kicking with a great bunch of people. I went along to see how the sea fishing section was doing and had a brilliant day. Malcolm and Diane did a great job organising the juniors match and there was Easter eggs for all the kids and a raffle as well as prizes and trophies.
The weather was lovely and everyone had a great day fishing with whiting, small cod and flounders being caught along the beach. A big thank you to all of you for making my day with you all such a good one I'm looking forward to coming along to the next event. Mark.
Libby's fish 5oz Belinda's fish 10oz
